Box tree hiking trail (Buchsbaumwanderweg):
Due to the mild climate of the middle and lower parts of the Mosel valley the most northern population of box tree in Europe can be found at these slopes. The largest connected geographic range is located between Karden and Müden. This evergreen plant grows on an area of about 300 hectare and in some parts it grows so thick that it forms a kind of wall.

Making a walk through the vineyards on a hot day you can smell Mediterranean scent. Even today, at some parts of the Mosel, box tree is used to make “palm twigs” for Palm Sunday. The twigs are hung in the house or courtyard to grant God’s blessing. The box tree hiking trail has a length of 4.1 km and connects the villages Karden and Müden. Sometimes it leads through narrow vineyards and rocky paths. Because of that sturdy shoes and sure-footedness are necessary. Information boards at the starting points show the way. On four theme boards you can get information about box tree, flora, fauna, St. Castor and the Mosel landscape.

The box tree hiking trail starts in Karden, ca. 2 km from the holiday island away. It is easily reached by car or foot. Hiking on the box tree trail is perfect to make a side trip to the cave of St. Castor or a trip to the castle of Eltz.

You will find further information about the route and sights on the web page.

Lenus-Mars-Trail:
The Lenus-Mars hiking path has a length of 5.1 km and connects the villages Karden and Pommern. On information boards you can read about the archaeological excavation and population of the temple complex.

Wooden sculptures of Celtic warriors, Roman women and late antiquity Kastor on the wayside “escort” climbing. The information boards in Karden (at the end of the street “Unter den Weinbergen”) and in Pommern (street “Am Goldberg”) show the route on a map. The hiking trail can be used throughout the year. Sturdy shoes are advisable.

At the Martberg between Pommern and Karden, around 180 m high above the Mosel, used to be a fortified city- like settlement of the Celts (Oppidum). At the centre of the settlement a Gallo-Roman temple complex was built. It reveals the changeful history of the Mosel area based on the development from Celtic to Roman culture.

The temple was dedicated to the god Lenus Mars, who is also the name giver to the “Martberg”. In the golden age of this cultural complex (ca. 200 A.D.) many temples were built. After years of archaeological excavation, parts of the temple complex were reconstructed. A tour through the temple complex and the main temple with its inner paintings is possible all-season.

Many found pieces will give an insight to 2000 years old cultural happenings. Thousands of Celtic and Roman coins, as well as weapons and pieces of jewellery were found. Several findings can be visited at the “Stiftsmuseum” in Karden.

The temple complex and the Lenus-Mars-Trail are equipped with information boards, which inform about the archaeological research results and the reconstructions of the Celtic Oppidum and the fortification.
